Veterans, particularly those who have served in combat, have experienced more trauma in their life than non-veterans. Research shows the following: Depression affects 20% of veterans. Suicidal ideation or attempts occur in 11% of veterans. Every Veteran is different of course but look for signs of depression. Some of them are:
Anxiety, agitation, sleeplessness or mood swings
- Feeling as if there is no reason to live
- Feeling excessive guilt, shame or sense of failure
- Feeling sad or depressed most of the time
- Hopelessness
- Increasing alcohol or drug misuse
- Rage or anger
